MID-TERM SELF EVALUATION (25 POINTS POSSIBLE)
By this point in the quarter (the 6th week) you will have learned about how school-aged children develop metacognition (See p. 313 in Chapter 12). This exercise is intended to help you raise awareness of your own metacognitive strategies; i.e., it's an opportunity to evaluate yourself as a learner in this class. It is not an evaluation of the class. Course evaluation will occur at the end of the quarter and is a different thing.
In order to earn full credit for completing this exercise, please follow the instructions below:
- If you submitted your autobiography by the published deadline, give yourself a maximum of 5 points.
- Click on the Gradebook tab in ANGEL and review your quiz grades. Total up all your quiz grades and include that total in your self-evaluation (maximum for quizzes at mid-term is 165). The quizzes are intended to help you focus while you are reading and to help you get familiar with vocabulary, theoretical concepts, and questions that developmental psychologists are asking. Describe in a short paragraph or two how you approached the task of taking these quizzes. What, if anything, worked well for you? Do you have any ideas about how you might want to approach this task differently in the second half of the quarter?
- Click on the Gradebook tab in ANGEL and review your essay grades. Total up all your essay grades and include that total in your self-evaluation (maximum for essays at mid-term is 200). The essay questions are designed to provide opportunities to apply what you are learning from the text, supplementary materials, and your classmates. Describe in a short paragraph or two how you approached the task of writing these essays. What, if anything, worked well for you? Do you have any ideas about how you might want to approach this task differently in the second half of the quarter? (Please note: If there is even one sentence that is plagiarized in an essay or a seminar post, the student will fail the assignment. If a student gets no points for an essay due to plagiarism, this essay can not count as one of the "free" essays for the quarter. If plagiarism happens more than once, further disciplinary action will be taken.) If you plagiarized and I didn't catch it, please grade yourself on essays and posts according to the rule above (i.e., give yourself a 0 grade for plagiarized sentences in either an essay or a post.)
-
Your participation in seminar/discussion rooms will be evaluated in FOUR ways: (1) the number of contributions you’ve made each of the first five weeks; (2) the number of posts you've read or skimmed written by your classmates and teacher; (3) the timeliness of your posts; and (4) the quality of your contributions. Please click here to read the mid-term seminar evaluation guidelines in our course website. Follow the instructions in order to estimate your seminar/discussion room grade. Be sure to be specific when connecting your seminar contributions to the listed criteria.
-
Once you have calculated your autobiography total, your quiz total, your essay total, and your seminar/discussion room participation score, please estimate points earned on the self evaluation (maximum is 25 points). Add these five numbers together for your mid-term total. The maximum possible score is 555.
If you earn between 500 and 555, your mid-term grade will be between 3.5 and 4.0.
If you earn between 444 and 499, your mid-term grade will be between 2.5 and 3.4
If you earn between 388 and 443, your mid-term grade will be between 1.5 and 2.4
If you earn between 333 and 387, your mid-term grade will be between 0.7 and 1.4
-
Estimate your mid-term grade (or range). Briefly describe how you will approach course requirements during the second half of the quarter.
