CHAPTER SIX POSSIBLE SEMINAR DISCUSSION QUESTIONS 1. Piaget's definition of intelligence is adaptation. Others consider a good memory or an extensive vocabulary, for example, to be signs of intelligence. After reading the text, has your definition of intelligence changed? Give an example of something you did that was intelligent according to your defintion, and explain why you consider the behavior smart. Point to the text material as necessary. 2. Some educators suggest that parents read to babies even before the babies begin talking. Some moms-to-be even read aloud to the developing fetus in their wombs. How do you feel about this? Has your reading of the text affected your feelings on this matter? If so, how? What theory of language development does it reflect? How does reading affect the language use of people you know? 3. How concerned should parents be if their 15-month-old still has not emitted her first word?
