This week's field trip focuses on a coniferous forest.
The goal for this week's observations is to record the birds that you see and to notice the ways that birds use their coniferous forest habitat. Did you see birds on the ground, in the understory, on the tree trunks, or among the branches?
Conifers are cone-bearing trees. Most conifers have needles instead of leaves. Needles reduce water loss to the environment. Conifers are found in locations where conservation of water is important; for example: areas with low annual rainfall and areas where the ground is snow-covered for many months.
