This week's focus is on birds that inhabit coniferous forests. These forests can be very old virgin forests like those found along the pacific coastline from northern California to British Columbia or previously logged reforested areas.
Coniferous trees provide cover for birds but they rarely provide adequate sources of food. Many species of birds nest in coniferous forests including the endangered Marbled Murrelet.
This week's lab focus is on the endocrine and reproductive systems. Spring is an excellent time to observe mating behaviors in the field. The vocalizations of male birds are particularly complex during the mating season. Although female birds can produce a variety of sounds, most females do not sing.
