This week's focus is on birds that inhabit deciduous forests. These forests are often second growth forests that are replacing previously logged coniferous forests or they are urban or suburban parks that contain deciduous trees.
Deciduous trees provide cover for birds but they rarely provide sources of food. Many of the birds that use deciduous forests for shelter are migrating from their wintering grounds to their breeding grounds in the Spring or birds that are returning to their wintering grounds in the Fall.
This week's lab focus is on the bird's behavior. Birds that are nesting in the northwest are choosing territories, building nests, and raising young. There are many opportunities to observe the behaviors of mated pairs, and males and females choosing mates.
