This week's field trip focuses on a lake. Lakes often have wetlands areas as well as areas of open water.

Choose a lake in your community.

Spend some of your time observing the birds that spend time on open water and some time observing birds that spend time in the wetland areas on the edges of the lake.

Are most of the birds that you observed resident birds or are most of the birds using the lake as a migratory rest stop?

The goal for this week's observations is to record the birds that you see and to notice the ways that birds use the lake and its surrounding habitats.

Focus on the bird's flight patterns. Are any of the birds that you observed using the lake as a migratory stopover? Notice which species land and take off from the land around the lake and which species land and take off from the water. Also note the techniques that each bird species uses to land and take off.
