This week's field trip focuses on freshwater wetlands. Wetlands are areas with water saturated soils. Some wetlands also include areas of standing water.
Freshwater wetlands include flooded fields, marshes, and swamps. Flooded fields usually result from heavy rainfall. Marshes occur along the shores of creeks, rivers, ponds and lakes. A swamp is a wetland that includes trees that have adapted to grow in saturated soil.
Choose a freshwater wetland in your community.
The goal for this week's observations is to record the birds that you see and to notice the ways that birds use their wetland habitat.
Focus on the bird's communications with members of its own species, members of other species and with humans. Notice how the bird responds to the presence of other birds, other animals, and humans.
