This week's discussion topic provides an opportunity for you to discuss the ways that you noticed human impact on the wetlands that you studied.
In your contribution to the discussion, describe how humans have impacted the wetlands that you visited. Whenever possible cite specific evidence that you observed. Restoration projects are underway at many local wetlands. Did you see any evidence of restoration? If not, what type of restoration would you suggest?
For some of you, wetlands may be of personal interest based on where you live (in a local sense). For example, at North Seattle Community College, the college community has become acutely aware of wetlands through the restoration project which is occurring on the north end of campus. For others of you, wetlands may provide a recreational opportunity (fishing, boating, etc.).
The funding for the North Seattle Community College campus wetland restoration is a part of a mitigation project that resulted from the loss of wetlands when the northbound on ramp at Northgate Way was modified two years ago.
Definitions:
restoration: the repair or rehabilitation of a habitat for the purpose of restoring its structure and ecological processes
mitigation: the replacement, usually by substitution, of wildlife habitat lost to reservoirs or other large-scale land and water developments
Post your message by opening the discussion web and choosing "Post a new article (starting a new thread)."
After you have added your contribution to the discussion, read the input of your classmates. How did the human impact on the wetland that you observed relate to the human impact described by other students? You can share your ideas or ask questions by using the "Reply" choice which appears at the top of the message you are reading.
Use "Search" to find a message by a particular student or on a specific topic.
Hint: Most students find that it is easier to create their contribution with their Word Processing program. After using the spellchecker and grammarchecker, you can cut and paste your message on the Discussion web. When you reply to other students' messages you can type directly onto the reply forms.
