Douglas fir predominates in second-growth forests although grand fir is also abundant. Douglas fir is relative intolerant of shading and grand fir is moderately shade tolerant. These trees grow well on land that has been cleared or burned. As these trees mature they provide the shade for western red cedar, western hemlock and other shade tolerant plants to grow.
